The word cordial derives from the Medieval Latin cordi?lis, meaning of or for the heart. Cordials are amongst the oldest spirits in the world. Cordials and liqueurs are defined as products obtained by mixing or redistilling distilled spirits with or over fruits, plants, or pure juices, or other natural flavoring materials, or with extracts derived from infusions, percolation, or maceration of such materials, and containing sugar not less than 2.5 percent by weight of the finished product. This orange-flavored liqueur is the essential ingredient in almost any margarita.
